GRADUATION REQUIRED ASSESSMENTS FOR DIPLOMA (GRAD)

The Graduation-Required Assessments for Diploma (GRAD) is a set of tests that all students who entered grade 8 in 2005-2006 or later must take and pass in order to graduate from a public high school in Minnesota, replacing the former BSTs. They include tests of writing in grade 9, reading in grade 10, and math in grade 11. All three tests are retaken until a passing score is achieved on each one.
Grade 9: Writing (First Attempt)
The GRAD Test of Written Composition, similar to the BST writing test that used to be given in grade 10, is a separate test administered in grade 9. It is scored on a scale of 1-6 with a 3 being a passing score.

Grade 10: Reading (First Attempt)
The GRAD reading test is comprised of items embedded in the grade 10 MCA-II assessments (referred to as the GRAD component of the MCA-II). Students must either score proficient on the reading MCA-II or achieve a passing score on the GRAD component of the MCA-II assessment. This test is retaken until a passing score is achieved on each one; however, subsequent administrations of the GRAD reading test do not include all MCA-II items, only the GRAD component.
